A tree to brave the seasonal elements

One of Ireland's tallest artificial Christmas trees stands almost 100ft high, which comprises more than 3,000 individual parts and illuminates the night sky for miles along the shores of Lough Foyle.

It is part of the annual charity drive at Mary Deeney's Bar and Restaurant, on the main Derry-Moville road, thought up by a local businessman, Mr Jim McLaughlin.

"We always had a real Christmas tree outside the pub, but the lights were high-maintenance," he said. "Whenever it was windy, the tree would bend with the wind and the lights slap against the branches. It was very frustrating, as we knew that every time a storm blew up, we'd have to replace hundreds of the bulbs the next day.

"So we came up with the idea of an artificial tree. With this specially commissioned tree, the lights are much more secure, and so far this year we haven't lost a single bulb."

Costing close to €30,000, the tree weighs more than 4½ tonnes and is adorned with thousands of multicoloured lights. By day the steel structure is unremarkable, but after dark the transformation is spectacular.

Last year Mr McLaughlin, who was a recipient of a North West People of the Year Award, raised over €25,000 for local charities.
