Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has dismissed suggestions he may resign after his Fatah party lost elections and said he would meet soon with Hamas leaders about forming a new government.

Mr Abbas told reporters in the West Bank he had been elected a year ago "on the basis of a clear and specific policy. I will continue working to implement this policy and I don't believe there is anything that prevents me from remaining (in office) for three years".

"I will certainly meet with the Hamas leadership to form the next cabinet. This may take place in not more than two weeks," Mr Abbas said, referring to the Islamic militant movement that defeated his Fatah party in the January 25th election.
