The legal challenge by 36 gardai to the Oireachtas subcommittee inquiry into the fatal shooting of Mr John Carthy at Abbeylara, Co Longford, has been adjourned by the High Court to October 2nd. The gardai, including members of the Emergency Response Unit who fired four shots at Mr Carthy after a siege at his home on April 20th 2000, resulting in his death, contend that the subcommittee of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence, Equality and Women's Rights has no jurisdiction to inquire into events and make findings of fact or express opinions which could be adverse to the good names of citizens.
