Brussels - Hundreds of police were mobilised just south of Brussels yesterday morning to guard the reconstruction of part of the notorious abduction of two young women in August 1995, allegedly by Marc Dutroux, write Patrick Smyth.
Dutroux and a co-accused, Michel Lelievre, were brought by helicopter at 10.30 a.m. to the side of the €19 motorway for a detailed examination of conflicting evidence under the eyes of the Neufchateau investigating team of prosecutor Mr Michel Bourlet and Judge Jacques Langlois.
The two girls, An Marchal (19) and Eefje Lambrechts (21), had allegedly been kidnapped by Dutroux and Lelievre late in the evening as they returned from a show, then drugged, and driven off in a Citroen CX. Evidence from two Dubliners, Mr Philp Dempsey, from Coolock, and Mr Dave McCarthy, from Darndale, who gave Dutroux a lift after his car broke down near here on the night of the abduction, was presented from their written accounts. Police confirmed they had not been asked to attend the scene as witnesses.
