Some 23 new members were enrolled in the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) in a ceremony in Dublin yesterday.
The RIA is an all-Ireland academic body with 369 members that promotes study in the sciences, humanities and social sciences.
To be elected to the RIA a person must make a significant contribution to scholarly or scientific research.
Those elected are entitled to use the designation "MRIA" after their names.
Membership of the academy, which is by peer nomination and election, is limited to people normally resident in Ireland.
The new members are: Dr Ferdinand von Prondzynski, president of Dublin City University (DCU); Dr Miriam Hederman O'Brien, former chancellor of the University of Limerick; Prof Vani Borooah (University of Ulster); Prof Robert Burch (QUB); Prof Andrew Carpenter (UCD); Prof Michael Cronin (DCU); Prof David Dickson (TCD); Dr John Doyle (Armagh Observatory); Prof Peter Flatt (University of Ulster); Prof Graham Gargett (University of Ulster); Prof William Graham (QUB); Prof Therese Kinsella (UCD); Prof Patricia Lysaght (UCD); Prof Séamus MacMathúna (University of Ulster); Prof Hugh Magennis (QUB); Prof Séamus Martin (TCD); Prof Peter Mitchell (UCD); Prof Werner Nahm (DIAS); Prof David Parnas (UL); Prof Kenneth Taylor (QUB); Prof Tigran Tchrakian (NUI, Maynooth); Prof Christopher Whelan (ESRI) and Prof Harry White (UCD).
