Ways of making buildings and other areas accessible to people with disabilities should be included on the agenda of the 32-county bodies to be set up under the peace process, a speaker from the University of Ulster told a seminar in Dublin yesterday. Mr Ken Ewart from the Centre for Universal Accessibility at the university was addressing a seminar in Shelbourne Park, organised by Mr Jimmy Deenihan TD (FG).
Mr Ewart said changing attitudes towards impairment was essential, especially if the environment was to be made more accessible. Ms Maureen Gilbert of the National Rehabilitation Board said building regulations used the phrase "reasonable and practicable" which had come to be interpreted as meaning that buildings need only be made accessible if it could be done cheaply.
