The Galway man who was charged with the murder of 17-year-old Swiss student Manuela Riedo earlier this month has been further remanded in custody.

At a hearing yesterday at Harristown District Court, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, Gerald Barry (27), of Ros an Glas, Rahoon, Galway, was remanded for 15 days until November 9th.

Mr Barry has been in custody at Castlerea Prison, Co Roscommon, since October 19th, when he was charged with Ms Riedo's murder at a special sitting of Galway District Court.

Ms Riedo's body was found at Lough Atalia on the morning of October 9th and a postmortem found that she had died of asphyxiation. She had arrived in Galway only three days before to take a two-week English language course.

Mr Barry arrived at Harristown District Court adjoining the prison complex yesterday morning with his head covered and did not speak during the court hearing.

Supt Seán Ward informed Judge Geoffrey Browne that there was a considerable amount of work to be completed, involving forensic evidence, and applied for a remand in custody of 28 days.

It was agreed that 15 days would be granted, with Mr Barry due again before Harristown District Court on November 9th.
