The jury in the trial of a man accused of raping a Waterford student watched videos of his interviews with gardaí in which he denied the allegation and claimed they had consensual sex.
During one interview, during which both he and a garda shouted loudly, he trenchantly rejected the allegation he had threatened the student that she would "end up like Meg" if she didn't have sex with him.
When a garda said to him: "Don't act the clown. You knew that 'Meg' is the name of a woman whose body was taken from the river after she went missing and who is the subject of a murder investigation," the accused replied loudly that he had never heard of her.
"I didn't threaten her and I didn't rape her," he replied.
It was day seven of the trial at the Central Criminal Court in which the 26-year-old has pleaded not guilty to eight charges of attacking the student on November 8th, 2006.
He denies four counts of rape, one of attempted anal rape, one of aggravated sexual assault, one alleging a threat to kill or injure her, and one of stealing her mobile phone in Waterford.
He told gardaí they had been kissing and she was masturbating him before they had consensual sex. He claimed she also had invited him home with her.
He denied he had ripped off her jeans or that he had hit her at any time but said that at one point they fell off the bonnet of a car on which they were having what he claimed was consensual sexual activity.
The accused said that when the student asked him to stop he did, and they both pulled up their clothes and left the area.
