A Limerick street trader has brought a High Court challenge to Limerick Corporation's new by-laws designating the city's "Milk Market" area for casual trading. Mr Michael Bridge man, of Glenview, Ballyneety, Co Limerick, claimed in an affidavit that the designated area would contain 99 spaces "very tight" in size, none of which would accommodate his 25 ft trailer from which he sold costume jewellery.

In court yesterday, Mr Angus Buttanshaw, for Mr Bridge man, said the by-laws, introduced a year ago, conflicted with the 1852 Limerick Markets Act which stated no market other than that established by the 1852 Act could be held within the borough. He said the spaces in the new designated market could not accommodate his client's trailer.

He said the corporation claimed that under recent legislation it was obliged to introduce the new bye-laws.

Mr Justice Kelly gave Mr Bridgeman leave to apply for an order to quash the by-laws and granted leave to apply for an injunction restraining the corporation taking any further steps to implement them.
