Adams attacks Labour on Lisbon

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has attacked the Labour Party's role in the Lisbon Treaty campaign.

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has attacked the Labour Party's role in the Lisbon Treaty campaign.

"One minute, Labour is attacking the Government and the next thing it is lining up behind Brian Cowen and Brian Lenihan in a rush to be Europe's Yes men in Ireland,'' he said.

Speaking in Dublin today, Mr Adams claimed that the Labour leadership was attempting to be all things to all people. He said Sinn Féin had set out the facts.

"We have analysed the treaty, analysed the commentary from the Government and set out our alternative,'' he added."The Government knows it cannot sell the content of the treaty. So it is trying to frighten the electorate into submission at a time when people are worried about the future.''

Labour, said Mr Adams, had joined in this effort with "Fine Gael and a strange mix of right-wing elements".

On the one hand, he said, Labour was attacking the Government on its awful economic and social policies while at the same time it was supporting it on Lisbon.

Mr Adams said it was in Ireland's national interest to vote No.
