SIPTU has this evening welcomed the decision by Aer Lingus to withdraw 93 notices of employment termination issued last week to probationary staff at the company.
SIPTU spokesman Mr Christy McQuillan said he had received confirmation from the airline’s management that the notices had been deferred, pending the outcome of the necessary consultation process on the total number of redundancies required.
Aer Lingus announced 2000 job losses last week, handing out termination notices to 93 probationary staff on Tuesday.
SIPTU contacted the Labour Relations Commission over the matter saying it was "alarmed that the management has taken unilateral action in this way without proper prior consultation with the Union and in breach of the agreed industrial relations procedures in the company".
Today Mr McQuillan said the union had now agreed to cancel its request for the intervention of the Labour Relations Commission on the basis that the normal consultation process would take place.
