Afghanistan has executed the first person since the fall of the notorious Taliban regime.

The man was convicted of murdering dozens of people, including four of his wives and was executed with a bullet through the head.

The execution was personally approved by President Hamid Karzai.

He had initially asked the Supreme Court to commute the sentence to life in prison despite confessions incriminating Abdullah Shah in murders officials described as exceptionally brutal. The weight of evidence later led Karzai to approve Shah's execution.

Shah's execution eight days ago was the first by Karzai's US-backed government since it came to power after US-led forces overthrew the radical Taliban regime in late 2001.

The court has also demanded the death penalty for two suspected Taliban members jailed for the killing of a French woman (29) working for the United Nations' refugee agency in Ghazni, a town to the southwest of Kabul, in November.
