Istanbul - One person was killed and 88 others hurt yesterday when a strong aftershock, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, rocked the province of Sakarya in quake-flattened northwest Turkey, local officials said.

A retired police officer died of a heart attack in the province as panic-stricken residents rushed out into the open during the tremor.

In Sakarya's main city, Adapazari, 83 people were hospitalised after fainting in shock or suffering minor fractures when they jumped off windows or balconies.
