The Taoiseach's evidence to the Mahon tribunal will not now be heard before September 11th, the tribunal has confirmed.

Mr Ahern had been due to appear this Thursday and Friday afternoon to answer questions into payments he received in the early 1990s.

The tribunal is currently hearing evidence from a number of AIB bank officials in relation to five cash lodgments totalling IR£116,481.11 made on Mr Ahern's behalf between December 1993 and December 1995.

Today the tribunal confirmed that because the evidence is pursuing more slowly than it had expected, Mr Ahern's evidence has been postponed until September 11st at the earliest.

Mr Ahern's former partner Celia Larkin was due to give evidence tomorrow but will now not be heard until Thursday.

Today the tribunal heard evidence from AIB official Philip Murphy, who was assistant bank manager at the branch in O'Connell Street, Dublin. Mr Murphy personally handled Mr Ahern's lodgments during the period under investigation by the tribunal.

The tribunal adjourned this morning because developer Tom Gilmartin was ill and unable to continue his evidence. He has been on the witness stand since the end of May but his evidence is only being heard for a few hours in the mornings because of his ill health.

Tomorrow, Mr Murphy of AIB and Jim McNamara are due to be heard before Ms Celia Larkin take the stand.
