The low poll in elections and referendums should be looked at by a Dail committee, the Taoiseach agreed. "A decade ago, it was put down to the register not being up to date, or not being adequate. I do not think it had much to do with that, quite frankly, even then, although I welcome the improvements," Mr Ahern added. He was replying to the DL leader, Mr Proinsias De Rossa, who asked Mr Ahern if he was concerned about the declining participation rate of the electorate in elections and referendums. Mr De Rossa suggested that the matter be referred to an all-party committee similar to the committee reporting on the Constitution. Mr Ahern said that while he did not want to reject the idea, one of the existing committees might be able to examine the matter.
