Passengers departing yesterday from Dublin airport were philosophical about the new security measures and said they would rather put up with delays if they knew they would be safer.

Kevin Fagan, Dublin, who was going to Chicago, said security was very important.

"You might be in a rush, but at the end of the day it's the security that counts. I'd rather it be more stringent and you'd feel more secure on the plane as well," he said.

He was travelling with Emma Betts who said it was better to be secure.

Peter Bonar and Eddie Curran from Donegal were flying to Frankfurt in Germany. "Delays wouldn't be too bad if the security is good," Mr Bonar said.

Mr Curran added: "Its better to be safer."

John Coombs from Britain was leaving for Spain where he lives. "I'm always happy to see more security. As long as there's plenty of information and you don't arrive not knowing about the increased security and delays." He said he was in the US after 9/11 and the flights were delayed for days.

Businessman Martin Richards had flown in from Manchester yesterday morning and said the flight was delayed because the incoming aircraft from Dublin was late. He was returning to Manchester on an afternoon flight.

"If there are delays because of enhanced security it's a better thing. If you're going to be held up if you're flying somewhere on business that can be a problem, but I'd much rather see a higher level of security than be whingeing about delays."

Duncan Hardy, another businessman, from Nottingham said: "I think security is paramount. I would be quite happy if there were delays for safety."

Lisa Payne from Manchester who flies to and from Dublin every week said planes were always delayed anyway. "We all have to be secure and vigilant. In the interest of security I wouldn't mind delays," she said."
