The world's largest passenger plane finally took to the skies today on its first commercial flight.

The double-decker Airbus A380 superjumbo soared away from Singapore's Changi airport bound for Sydney amid scenes of celebration and congratulation.

The aircraft touched down at Sydney airport with 471 passengers aboard. The tickets for the maiden flight were auctioned on Ebay, raising nearly €1 million for charity.

The aircraft will return to Singapore tomorrow.

Wiring problems had meant that deliveries of the A380, which is powered by Rolls-Royce engines, had been put back 18 months.

But last week the first of the planes was delivered to Singapore Airlines.
