A CIE tour group of 23 Irish and Canadian passengers held up at Shannon airport for 24 hours flew to Toronto last evening on a relief aircraft.
The centre engine of the Royal Airlines three-engine Lockheed 1011 jet, flying from Dublin to Shannon, had developed mechanical trouble and was shut down by the pilot There were 172 passengers on board, who were accommodated overnight in three local hotels.
Mr Richard Rhatigan (49), of Toronto, a native of Dublin who was attending the Notre Dame-Navy American football game in Croke Park, said: "We got a bad shaking around before landing in gale-force winds, but we were well looked after in the hotel."
