An Aer Lingus flight turned back to Dublin yesterday morning five minutes after take-off when smoke was found coming from the rear galley of the aircraft.
The British Aerospace 146 was en route to Edinburgh. The 80 passengers travelled to Edinburgh an hour behind schedule on a supplementary aircraft. An Aer Lingus spokesman said that there were indications of a fire on board. There was some smoke and from a safety point of view it was felt best that the aircraft returned to Dublin.
The crew dealt with the matter and quickly tackled the problem, he said. "The crew did an excellent job. In following standard safety procedures they managed the situation quickly and efficiently."
As a precautionary measure the aircraft returned to Dublin where the cause of the problem was being investigated, he said.
