An Irish relief mission to poverty-stricken Albania is in jeopardy after a weekend aid concert in Co Fermanagh had to be cancelled because of poor ticket sales, losing nearly £70,000.

The organisers, who blamed Friday's failed bomb attack at the county's Carrybridge Hotel, have issued an urgent appeal for donations.

Saturday's and yesterday's concerts at Necarne Castle in Irvinestown were called off due to disastrous box-office sales.

Among the reasons for the poor sales, according to the organisers, were heightened fears following the car-bomb incident.

The charity organising the event yesterday pleaded for donations from the public to rescue the aid mission.

Instead of making a planned £60,000 for Albanian children living in serious poverty, the organisers have lost at least £65,000.

The event on Saturday was to have been headlined by Shane McGowan and folk singer Frances Black, but only a few hundred of the 3,500 tickets were sold.

Those planning to attend the three-day music festival had been urged to bring two articles, either clothing or hygiene products, for abandoned baby units in the Necerest area of Albania.

The concert was cancelled after Friday night's show went ahead with a half-filled show ground to the sounds of Van Morrison, Brian Kennedy and Mary Black.

Only last week the organisers had billed the event as one of the biggest-ever musical extravaganzas to be held in the North.
