Cans of Coke from Belgium suspected of poisoning hundreds of people in Europe could be on sale in the UK, CocaCola admitted yesterday. However, a company spokesman emphasised that none of the company's products on sale in the Republic had been sourced in either France or Belgium.
The health scare which began in Belgium on June 10th after almost 50 people were admitted to hospital with nausea after drinking Coke products, has led to Coca-Cola and all of the company's other canned soft drinks, such as Fanta and Sprite, being banned in Belgium and Luxembourg.
Mr Jim Whelan, Coca-Cola's public relations manager in Ireland, said last night that the company had written to the trade and the Consumer Association to reassure them that all of the company's products on sale in Ireland were safe.
