A member of staff at the Mater Hospital in Dublin has been suspended after a complaint of sexual assault by a male elderly patient.

In a statement, the hospital said it had informed the Garda which is investigating the allegation. Hospital authorities are also conducting an investigation.

The statement says: "The staff accused has vehemently denied the complaint and pending an outcome of the investigation has been suspended on full pay".

A Garda spokeswoman confirmed the allegation had been made and that it was being investigated.
