Ireland's ambassador to Singapore is travelling to Jakarta to represent the Government in the case of an Indonesian-born child with Irish citizenship.

Hugh Swift was asked by the Department of Foreign Affairs to liase with the Indonesian authorities in the case of Tristan Dowse (3), who was left at an orphanage outside Jakarta a year ago after his adoptive parents decided the adoption was "not working out".

The couple, Irish accountant Joe Dowse and his wife Lala, later had a baby and moved to Azerbaijan. The adoption, when Tristan was eight weeks old, was certified by the Irish Adoption Board, and he is an Irish citizen and has an Irish passport.

Indonesian authorities hope to annul the adoption on the grounds that it was illegal because there was no record of a letter from the ministry approving it.

The Indonesian Social Affairs ministry was due to rule on the legality of the adoption today, but it is understood the hearing was called off due to adverse weather conditions.

If the adoption is ruled illegal, it will be up to the Irish Government to decide on whether or not to revoke the boy's Irish citizenship. He would then be free to be adopted by an American couple who have been visiting him in the orphanage.

Mr Swift will represent Ireland in any discussions following the outcome of this hearing. Ireland has an honorary consul but no embassy in Indonesia.
