Two members of a Limerick ambulance crew who were attacked while responding to an emergency call on Thursday night were back at work yesterday. One of the paramedics was treated for a minor head wound in hospital after they were beaten by youths, one of whom was wielding a baseball bat.

A spokesman for the Health Service Executive said yesterday that the ambulance crew had responded to a call about a 14-year-old girl who had collapsed in O'Malley Park in the city.

When they arrived, a crowd had gathered and the ambulance personnel were kicked and punched by three youths as they attempted to treat the girl.

One of the two ambulance personnel was treated at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital for a minor head wound.

The HSE spokesman said yesterday it believed the emergency call about the girl was genuine.

He said there was no record of anyone fitting her description having received treatment in an A&E department following the attack.

Both men were back on normal uties in Limerick yesterday and were due to liaise with gardaí and the HSE authorities about the attack.
