Gardaí in Cork have renewed their appeal for witnesses to assist them in their inquiries in to the murder of a Lithuanian man, whose body was sent home for burial yesterday.

The body of Gintaras Balcionas (38), a father of one, was discovered face down in the garden of his flat at Rockgrove Terrace near the train station on the Lower Glanmire Road in Cork shortly after 4pm on October 9th.

It is believed he moved in to the rented house on the Lower Glanmire Road last year with his wife.

A post-mortem revealed that the Lithuanian national incurred serious head and upper body injuries.

His body was released to his family last Thursday after an inquest into his death was postponed until next spring because a criminal investigation is still under way.

A funeral director from Lithuania made the journey to Cork last Thursday and the body was taken by ferry this weekend back to his native town of Siauliai.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to assist them in their inquiries.

They are particularly interested in speaking to a taxi driver who is believed to have picked up two male passengers near Mr Balcionas's flat at Rockgrove Terrace on October 9th between 4pm and 5pm.

Investigating officers in Mayfield, Cork, have asked anyone who might have witnessed suspicious activity in the Lower Glanmire Road area on the afternoon of the murder to contact the station on 021-455 8510.
