Due to an error in the processing of a High Court report yesterday concerning a prisoner, Noel Callan, it was incorrectly stated that Callan had got leave to appeal against his conviction for the murder of Garda Sgt Patrick Morrisey in 1985. Callan has served 16 years of a 40-year sentence.

Callan brought an application under Section 2 of the Criminal Procedure Act 1993 (the so-called miscarriage of justice legislation) before the Court of Criminal Appeal on Wednesday seeking leave to adduce new evidence in support of his claim that there had been a miscarriage of justice. An earlier appeal by Callan against his conviction was dismissed.

The court told Callan that he would receive a hearing date in December.
