Gardaí investigating the death of a baby boy in Waterford following a home circumcision believe that a number of people are carrying out such operations in Ireland.

Four-week-old Callis Osaghae died in Waterford Regional Hospital in the early hours of Monday morning.

Appealing for information on the man suspected of carrying out the procedure in Waterford, Supt Mick McGarry said "a number of people may be involved" in carrying out such home procedures. The man, described as white, white-haired and in his early 40s, was driving a red estate car. "We are appealing for anybody with information on this man, or indeed with any knowledge about these procedures to contact us," Supt McGarry said. "Obviously any information we receive will be treated in confidence."

The superintendent said gardaí in Waterford were working on a number of lines of inquiry. It is believed Callis Osaghae's parents paid the man €300 to carry out the procedure, which is unavailable at Waterford Regional Hospital or other hospitals in the south east. The health board only carries out circumcisions for medical rather than cultural reasons
