The Arab League has said that an Arab summit which was postponed last week because of the death of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia had been further delayed and ministers would discuss a new date at a meeting in September.
King Fahd died on Aug. 1, two days before the summit was due to take place on Aug. 3 in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. After his death was announced, the Arab League said the summit would be postponed for a few days but set no date.
"It is unlikely that the summit will take place in the next few days. Consultations are ongoing with Egypt as the host country to propose another date for consideration by the Arab countries," a spokesman said.
The summit had been due to discuss the situation in the Palestinian areas, the issue of Iraq and terrorism.
Sharm el-Sheikh was itself hit by bombings in July.
Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah, who was pronounced king immediately after Fahd's death, represented King Fahd at Arab summits for some years. He had taken control of day-to-day affairs in the kingdom in 1995, after Fahd suffered a stroke.
