Archaeologists have found four Pharaonic tombs that go back more than 4,000 years, Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities said in a statement today.

The tombs were uncovered by Spanish archaeologists in the Ahanassya district of Beni Suef province, 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Cairo.

The head of the supreme council, Zahi Hawass, said in the statement that the walls of one of the tombs were decorated with religious drawings, and a picture of the tomb's owner appeared on its door.

The tombs date from the period 2260-2050 BC.
