Lord Archer, serving four years in jail after being found guilty of perjury and perverting the course of justice at his 1987 libel trial, is to appeal against his conviction, it emerged today.

The former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party had been found guilty of lying his way to victory in his now-notorious 1987 libel trial against the Daily Starover its claim that he had slept with prostitute Monica Coghlan.

Lord Archer, who was jailed on July 19th, 2001, faces £175,000 sterling costs and an estimated £500,000 legal bill.

Lord Archer also faces possible civil actions said to amount to more than £4 million by the Daily Starand the News of the Worldover that 1987 libel victory.

The disgraced peer was transferred from Belmarsh prison in south east London. to the modern Wayland prison near Thetford in Norfolk which is a Category C jail last week.

He was initially made a Category D prisoner suitable for an open jail. He was reclassified as a higher risk Category C inmate after Scotland Yard confirmed they were examining allegations that millions of pounds went missing from a fundraising campaign for Iraqi Kurds in 1991.
