The youngest son of Lord Archer was tonight facing a career in tatters after he was banned from working in the City for his role in a rogue share deal.

Mr James Archer, a member of the self-styled "flaming Ferraris" group of traders, was struck off the City watchdog's register after a two-year investigation into the share-dealing scandal.

The expulsion means he cannot trade in the City, and industry sources said the 27-year-old was unlikely to work in the finance sector again.

It comes just eight days after he sat at the back of an Old Bailey courtroom and watched as his father, the millionaire novelist and former politician, was jailed for four years for perjury and perverting the course of justice in connection with his 1987 libel action against the Daily Star.

But Lord Archer's unofficial biographer, Mr Michael Crick, said: "Jeffrey Archer was jailed for perjury, his father, William, was accused of fraud and jailed for embezzlement, and now James has been shown to be dishonest."

Mr Archer was struck off for trying to manipulate the Swedish OMX index in 1998.
