Mr Thomas McCauley, the Belfast man stabbed to death in Waterford on Monday, was buried in Belfast yesterday after a republican funeral.

Mr McCauley's coffin was draped in a Tricolour when it arrived at the Holy Cross Church on the Crumlin Road in north Belfast. About 300 mourners heard Father Aidan Troy say Mr McCauley was with God, "no matter what he might have done".

After the service, the Tricolour was placed on the casket by two men in white shirts and black trousers who opted to walk behind a BBC camera filming the service. The casket was carried to the McCauley family home in nearby Farringdon Court from where it was driven to the City Cemetery in west Belfast.

Mr McCauley was known in north Belfast as a prominent republican and is believed to have been a member of the IRA, adds Jim Cusack, Security Editor. However, it is believed he severed his links with the movement some time ago.
