Gardaí have seized guns, ammunition, balaclavas and a large quantity of drugs in a major search operation in Co Kildare.
The seizures were made after a uniform Garda patrol, backed up by units taking part in the force's Operation Anvil, intercepted a vehicle and driver in the Curragh area on Wednesday night.
This prompted searches last night and today in a number of locations in the Kildare area. So far four sawn-off shotguns, three pistols, one of which was fully loaded, have been seized.
A quantity of ammunition, drugs paraphernalia, mace spray, and balaclavas were also found. A substance believed to be Cocaine, which may have a street value of up to €100,000 was also seized in the raids.
A spokesman said searches were "far from concluded" and more finds were expected.
A man and a woman, both in their 30s, have been arrested and are being held in Kildare and Newbridge Garda stations under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. An investigation team drawn from the Carlow/Kildare Garda Division under the command of Chief Superintendent Michael Byrnes and Superintendent John Murphy, has been put toghether and is being assisted by a number of Garda national units.
