United Nations - The US weapons inspector, Mr Scott Ritter, resigned his UN post yesterday, citing lacklustre support for Iraqi disarmament efforts by UN Security Council members.
In a letter to the chief inspector, Mr Richard Butler, Mr Ritter said recent security council decisions downplayed the significance of Iraq's refusal to co-operate with the inspectors and indicated the council was "no longer willing and/or capable of the implementation of its own law."
CBS television later reported that Mr Ritter was under investigation by the FBI for allegedly passing classified documents on Iraq to Israel. Mr Ritter had denied that he gave classified information about Iraqi weapons to Israel, CBS said, adding that one official doubted charges would be brought against him.
