An Army NCO, Sgt Tommy O'Brien, who has been charged with the murder of a 20-year-old man in Ashbourne, Co Meath, on New Year's Day, was granted bail in the High Court yesterday.

Mr Patrick Purcell, counsel for the accused man, told the court that the Army was willing to allow him to live in McKee Barracks until the hearing of his case. He said that an independent surety of £10,000 was available to the court.

Mr Justice O'Neill granted Sgt O'Brien his own bail of £1,000 with an independent surety of £10,000. He ordered him to reside at McKee Barracks and to stay away from Milltown Estate in Ashbourne. He also ordered him to surrender his passport and to sign on daily at the Bridewell Garda station in Dublin.
