Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said today her supporters had increased their majority in congressional elections and predicted political stability after a campaign marred by violence.
Government spokesmen, quoting partial results, said at least 100 administration candidates had won seats in the 275-member House of Representatives following Monday's election.
However, the official Commission on Elections had not announced any results and there were no details yet on any opposition wins.
"I believe we will have an even bigger majority in the House and an almost complete sweep of the local chief executives," Ms Arroyo said in a statement. "There's going to be political stability."
The government had about 180 seats in the previous 236-member chamber, which has since been enlarged. An administration sweep of the House and in elections to about 18,000 local government posts was never in doubt.
But Ms Arroyo made no mention of the elections for 12 seats in the Senate, where analysts say a groundswell of opposition to her is emerging.
Early trends of the count show six opposition, two independents and only four administration candidates in the top 12 for the Senate
