A man accused of assaulting a Romanian whose body was later found in a suitcase in Dublin's Royal Canal in July appeared in court yesterday. He was refused bail.
Mr Igor Derjhack (28), a Ukranian with an address at Mountjoy Square, Dublin, was charged with assault causing harm to Mr Adrian Bestea (21) at a flat on Strand Road, Sandymount, on July 8th last. Mr Bestea's body was found on July 20th in a suitcase near Binn's Bridge on the canal.
Det Sgt Walter O'Sullivan told Dublin District Court he arrested Mr Derjhack at Mountjoy Square on Thursday morning and he was brought to Mountjoy Garda Station.
After he was charged that night, he said: "I am not guilty". Gardai objected to bail.
Mr Derjhack was remanded in custody to Cloverhill District Court on September 14th.
