The threat to Junior and Leaving Cert exams abated this evening as delegates at the ASTI conference in Galway voted to recommend members engage in a series of measures that do not include boycotting exam work or continuing with their series of rolling strike action.

Earlier today delegates overwhelmingly rejected Labour Court proposals aimed at settling their dispute over pay and teacher status.

Shortly before midday the delegates voted by a majority of more than 200 to support a motion rejecting the proposals. The early vote was held behind closed doors but this afternoon motions were passed recommending a ban on voluntary and extra-curricular activities such as supervision andteacher substitution.

A ban has also been recommended on the implementation of new curriculums and co-operation with Government-sponsored committees and initiatives.

Voting at the conference could prove to be a gauge of sentiment of the union's 17,000-strong membership but the conference recommendations will take effect only if endorsed by the union's full membership, which votes next week.

The withdrawal from supervisory work previously closed schools. It is not yet clear whether new measures can be introduced to allow teaching continue while teachers withdraw from monitoring breaks.

The Labour Court proposals, aimed at giving teachers a significant pay rise without breaching the terms of the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, was rejected by delegates the by 312 to 96 with nine abstentions.
