Talks between the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland and Department of Education officials at the Labour Court are expected to continue into this evening. Both sides are working towards finalising details of a package to present to the union’s standing committee tomorrow.

A spokeswoman for the ASTI told

today media reports about any proposals remained ‘pure speculation’. She said details were still being worked out and the court’s recommendation was expected sometime tomorrow morning.
The committee is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. and it is believed the recommendation will be put to a ballot of the union’s 17,000 members.
ASTI negotiators, led by general secretary Mr Charlie Lennon, were upbeat about the prospects of breakthrough last night.
But according to the spokeswoman nothing has been finalised yet.
Reports today suggested the package would include no downpayment for teachers, and a process which would allow all three teachers’ unions to pursue payments for break-time supervision and substitution.
Yesterday the ASTI announced they were deferring the remainder of their three-day strike action this week as a "gesture of goodwill".
Meanwhile secondary school students are meeting in UCD this afternoon to elect a committee for the newly formed Union of Secondary Students.
