Nigerian road marshals said today 22 people were burned to death in southwest Oyo state when the buses in which they were travelling went up in flames after a head-on collision.
Olu Familoni, Oyo state sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, said three other travellers died in a separate accident on the Lagos-Ibadan highway.
"All 22 people in the two buses were burnt, some beyond recognition after the vehicles caught fire on collision," he said in the state capital, Ibadan.
Fatal crashes are frequent on Nigerian roads and marshals usually blame them on overloading, poorly maintained vehicles and speeding by unqualified drivers. But many motorists attribute the accidents to a crumbling highway network.
