The head office of the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU) has confirmed today it has dismissed its District Secretary in Dublin Mr Mick O’Reilly.
The union said it sent letters to Mr O’Reilly and Northern Ireland organiser Mr Eugene McGloin confirming their dismissal last Friday, April 26th.
It said Mr O’Reilly had been found guilty of gross misconduct following an investigation. The two men have five days to appeal.
But Mr O'Reilly this evening told ireland.comthat he had not received a letter from the union concerning his dismissal.
"I haven’t received a letter, I haven’t received a phonecall . . . I understand the union has briefed the media about a dismissal. I think it is very unfair and gives a backward message to employers about how to deal with employees," Mr O’Reilly.
Mr O’Reilly said he needed to see the document or letter before he commented any further.
The union suspended Mr O’Reilly and Mr McGloin on June 26th, 2001 pending investigation into a number of allegations of misconduct.
