Tottenham Hotspur 0 Charlton Athletic 1
England full-back Chris Powell struck a 70th minute winner at White Hart Lane this evening to give Charlton their second league win of the season against Spurs.
While the home side had been pressing forward for much of the match in search of a badly needed kick-start to their season, it was the visitors who took a shock lead as the clock ticked past the 70-minute mark and it was a goal that will give Glenn Hoddle nightmares.
Addicks captain Graham Stuart crossed from the right, and as the ball looped over Euell, Ledley King made a hash of his clearance, succeeding only in kneeing the ball into space and enabling left-back Chris Powell to steal in and grab his first league goal for Charlton, bundling the ball home from close range with the outside of his right knee.
The England defender's only other goal in four years at The Valley was ironically also against Tottenham, in Spurs' 4-2 FA Cup fourth-round victory last season.
The visitors were forced to defend their slender advantage frantically as the match wore on but were able to cling on by the skin of their teeth
