Attempt to set new speed record

SCOTTISH champion woman driver Ms June Henderson Laird set off from Guinleys Bridge on the Kerry/Cork border at 3 p.m

SCOTTISH champion woman driver Ms June Henderson Laird set off from Guinleys Bridge on the Kerry/Cork border at 3 p.m. yesterday hoping to re-establish her speed record for driving through all 32 counties of Ireland while starting and finishing in the same place.

The record she had set in 1990, of 17 hours and 57 minutes, was beaten in 1992 by a team managing to put the nose of its car into all counties in 12 hours and 19 minutes.

The new holders had been favoured by the raising of the Irish speed limit from 55 to 60 m.p.h. Also they did not finish at their starting point and so cut 120 miles off the distance driven.

June drives while husband James navigates.

"They're aiming for 151/2 hours," Tim Horgan of Ahern's Garage in Castleisland, the major sponsor of the attempt, told The Irish Times yesterday.

The Scottish duo will stand out from Irish motorists by their respectful adherence to the speed limit.

"The car is equipped with a tachograph to measure speed," Mr Horgan said.

They were due back at Guinleys Bridge at about 6 a.m. today.
