The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has warned passengers that unofficial action by air traffic controllers at Dublin airport could lead to further delays.

Last night hundreds of passengers were delayed after 32 flights were unable to land or take off between 10.30pm and 11.30pm due to the dispute.

In a statement today, the IAA said there were currently no flight delays due to staffing but that they could not be ruled out later.

The IAA statement said last night's dispute was "caused by the refusal of air traffic controllers to honour an agreement with the Authority to cover short notice illnesses and absences with overtime. There is no shortage of controllers at Dublin Airport."

The statement went on to say that the unofficial action had gone ahead despite an agreement between the Irish Aviation Authority and the air traffic controllers union IMPACT at a Labour Relations Commission facilitation meeting last Wednesday to a process to deal with the controller's grievances.
