Europe's biggest airline, British Airways, has cancelled its scheduled flight from London to Saudi Arabia tomorrow because of security fears, just hours after suspending a flight to Washington.
A British Airways spokeswoman said BA flight 263 - due to leave London's Heathrow Airport at 13.35 p.m. for the Saudi capital Riyadh - had been suspended for security reasons on the advice of the British government.
The airline said it would review the situation over the weekend.
Earlier today, British Airways cancelled a London-Washington flight following similar advice from the British government. Flight BA223 from Heathrow to Washington was grounded less than two hours before it had been due to take off at 3.05 p.m. The return flight will also be cancelled.
The same flight was also cancelled yesterday after BA received "security advice" from the British government. On New Year's Eve, flight BA223 was kept on the runway for three hours after landing at Washington Dulles International Airport to allow security officials to board the plane and question passengers. The Boeing 747 was escorted into Dulles by two F-16 fighter jets.
Fears of a September 11th-style attack has grounded seven US-bound planes in just over a week.
Last night it emerged that US authorities were acting on intelligence information - and not just suspicious passenger names - when they boarded the BA jet on New Year's Eve. However, no evidence of terrorism was found.
"We had concerns with individuals on the flight, but threat reporting information led us to make the decision to have the flight escorted," a national security official said.
An Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to Los Angeles was also cancelled after US authorities refused to allow it to land. Mexican officials found no evidence of a threat and all 40 passengers booked on the Aeromexico flight were allowed to leave on a Mexicana flight.
