The GMB union says members have voted to accept a pay deal at British Airways offered last month that averted a repeat of a strike that cost the company £40 million sterling last year.

The statement from the union said: "88 per cent of the members of GMB working for British Airways have voted to accept the recent pay deal and so end the threat of strike action over the pay dispute."

British Airways made its offer late last month to more than 10,000 ground staff to avert a planned 24-hour strike.

Europe's second-largest carrier agreed to a back-dated 8.5 per cent pay rise over three years and a £1,000 bonus payable by September 2006.
