A seven-month-old baby boy has died in hospital this morning following a car crash in Co Meath yesterday.

A seven-month-old baby boy has died in hospital this morning following a car crash in Co Meath yesterday.

The crash took place at Cushinstown on the N2 between Ashbourne and Slane at around 6.00pm yesterday evening.

It is understood the car the boy was travelling in was hit by a van as it was stopped by the side of the road.

The baby was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital last night. He died early this morning.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was travelling on the N2 between Kilmoon Cross and Balrath Cross yesterday evening to contact Ashbourne Garda station.

It is the second tragedy involving children on the State's roads this week. On Monday two girls died after a car crash in Co Longford.

They were named last night as Eva Carberry-Varden (6) from Oranmore, Co Galway and Mickella Logan (9) from Kilcock, Co Kildare.

It is understood the BMW hatchback car in which the two girls were travelling hit an embankment and left the road on the old N4 at Camlisk outside Edgeworthstown at around 9.30pm.

It is understood that Mickella died at the scene while Eva died in hospital.

Two adults and two other children were in the car. All four were injured and were taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar. One woman has since been released from hospital.

One of the injured children is reportedly in a critical condition.

According to the latest Garda statistics, 297 people have died on the State's roads, compared to 332 for the same period last year.
