The new-born baby abandoned in a shoe box at a golf club in north Belfast a week ago spent his first Christmas with foster parents. The boy - since named Christopher - was left in the car-park of the Fortwilliam golf club eight days ago.

He was discovered by a couple leaving the club and taken to hospital where he was pronounced healthy.

Social services have renewed their appeal for his natural mother to come forward. A spokesman for the North and West Belfast Health and Social Services Trust said: "Baby Christopher is fit and well and has now been discharged from hospital and is in the care of a warm and loving foster family for Christmas.

"We would still, however, encourage Christopher's mother to make contact with our staff and assure her she will be treated with respect, sensitivity and confidentiality."

Members of the golf club where the baby was found have set up a fund for him. Over £700 was raised in a whip-round and the proceeds of a club competition next month will go to Christopher.
