Mist and fog has delayed the start of the Scottish PGA Championships at Gleneagles this morning.

The first round was due to begin at 7.30 a.m. but it was impossible to start play with visibility down to a few yards on some points of the PGA Centenary Course.

Conditions were slowly improving however and officials were hopeful of completing the first round on schedule this evening.

The Stg£1 million tournament has major Ryder Cup issues at stake, both for those hoping to play at the Belfry next month and those aiming to host the event in 2009.

Gleneagles is one of the four Scottish venues bidding to stage the biennial contest in eight years time and make their final presentation to the cup committee this evening.

Scottish duo Andrew Coltart and Andrew Oldcorn meanwhile are trying to move up from 13th and 14th respectively in the points standings into the top 10 automatic qualification places for the European team in the penultimate counting event.

Europe's team will be finalised after the BMW International Open next week with the top 10 joined by captain Sam Torrance's two wild cards, widely expected to be Sergio Garcia and Jesper Parnevik.
