A FRENCH baker was yesterday jailed for four years after engaging in what a judge described as "a brutal and frenzied attack" that blinded a west Clare man in one eye.

At Ennis Circuit Court yesterday, Toufike Lenaubdi (29), of Millstream Court, Ennis, Co Clare, pleaded guilty to the assault causing serious harm to Patrick O'Neill (27), of Tullaher, Kilrush, at Lenaubdi's apartment on December 27th, 2005.

In sentencing Lenaubdi yesterday to six years suspending the final two, Judge Gerard Griffin said the injuries that Mr O'Neill had suffered in the assault were horrific.

Judge Griffin said Lenaubdi - who recently opened a bakery shop in Ennis - had used a 10 inch knife and a carving fork to stab Mr O'Neill in and around his two eyes and his left arm during the assault.

Judge Griffin said that he rejected Lenaubdi's assertion that he was acting in self-defence.
